The coach of the England cricket team, Andy Flower, has said that Andrew Strauss was one of the best captains that England has ever produced and the team would definitely miss him in the future both as a captain and as a player. Strauss had announced his retirement from all forms of the game after the defeat of England in the recent test series against South Africa.

Strauss was appointed as the captain of England in January 2009 after the resignation of Kevin Pietersen from the post of captaincy due to the controversy with Peter Moores, the coach of England at that time. Strauss proved to be a fantastic captain over the years and he led the team to some great victories. Under his captaincy, England won two consecutive Ashes series and also became the no. 1 test team in the world.

When Strauss was given the captaincy, the English team was going through a lean patch. But, Strauss changed the whole attitude of the team. He brought a lot of positivity in the dressing room. As per Flower, Strauss was a great leader. He never forced any player to play in a particular way. He let every player play his natural game and always backed those players who were going through a bad run.

Flower said that apart from being a great captain, Strauss was a very good opening batsman as well. He played some glorious knocks for England during his career. He had got a tight technique and he was very good against the swing bowling. On being asked about the new test captain Alistair Cook, Flower said that Cook has captained the ODI team very well so far and hopefully, he would do a fine job as a test captain as well.

The captain of the England Cricket team Andrew Strauss hopes that neither his team nor their opponents Pakistan will let the history of recent affairs come between them and mar the upcoming Test series.

The two sides are slated to play in a Test series in the United Arab Emirates, which will act as the home country for Pakistan, with most international teams eager to avoid travelling to Pakistan after the harrowing attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team bus a couple of years back.

Speaking to the press ahead of the series, Strauss said that the match fixing scandal that rocked the two nations should be forgotten and it should not be used as an issue to elevate the rivalry.

The England Cricket team has been in glittering form over the last few months, the pinnacle of which was reached when they defeated newly crowned World Champions India in a 4-0 whitewash in England and secured the top position in the ICC Cricket Rankings as the best Test team in the world.  The latest England cricket odds online place them as 10/11 favourites.

Strauss is also hopeful that his side will not look back angrily at The Oval Incident of 2006 when the then Pakistan captain Inzamam ul-Haq walked off the field with his side, forfeiting the match when the team was accused of ball tampering.

Strauss knows that the series will be extremely competitive as Pakistan have not faced a strong opposition in a very long time and will want to prove a point and the England Cricket team will also want to show them that they are the top dogs. However, the England skipper is hopeful that this rivalry will be left in the field and hopes it will not boil over and mar the entire series between the two nations, who are playing after a gap of almost three years.
